The Norwegian School in London is located in Wimbledon, a peaceful, affluent
area of south west London with easy rail and tube access to central London.
Most families with pupils at the school choose to settle locally. The area
boasts several large parks offering a wide range of activities. Our school
is a mid-19th Century Victorian villa situated in an acre of
land, where the pupils can enjoy physical activity on the variety of
playground apparatus and in the area suitable for ball games. The school
was completely refurbished in 2004, resulting in premises that are both
user-friendly and pleasant. |

"Arriving
in London where everything was new and different, we were so relieved
as parents to be able to send our children to The Norwegian School
from day one. We can’t express how important it was! All schools
should be like this one.”
Sigurd and Elisabeth, parents |

Moving to a new country is a big decision. There are so many new
impressions to assimilate. The Norwegian School in London eases the
transition to English life for the entire family. Our skilled staff will do
their best for your family, as will the parents who play an active part in
various school events. The common denominator for everyone is that we all
know how being in a new country feels. |

In this positive,
unique learning environment with its small classes and high teacher-pupil
ratio, all teaching is tailored to individual skills and needs. We are also
very proud of our excellent exam results.
Throughout the school, the timetable required by law is expanded and English
is particularly emphasised. We believe that English should not be confined
to the classroom, but should be actively practiced in many environments.
Our pupils are encouraged to sit EFL examinations.
Language is the basis for all teaching. Mastering their mother tongue is
especially important for those pupils living abroad, as most intend
returning to a Norwegian kindergarten or school at some point in the
future. Therefore, the importance of the Norwegian language is particularly
emphasised. |

 |
We encourage our pupils to widen their horizons and school trips are
arranged to reinforce the themes on which the pupils are working. With
Central London on our doorstep, we have a multitude of museums, theatres and
exhibitions providing a wide range of stimulating learning opportunities. |

is Wimbledon Common with its surprising variety of flora and fauna. The
intimate atmosphere and buzzing nightlife of Wimbledon Village , with its
trendy boutiques, cafes, restaurants and traditional pubs, is just around
the corner. |

Being a parent at The Norwegian School is also a positive
experience. The school functions as a social meeting point, and new
children and parents alike are very well received. Parents can participate
in a wide range of social activities including jogging, yoga, sightseeing,
pub nights and much more. |

Our
youngest, who is in kindergarten, used to be a shy, timid girl but has
become a happy, carefree person. The Norwegian School in London has
made life easier for us here in England.

Chalk is redundant when electronic digital whiteboards are the norm....
We have a well-equipped IT suite and pupils are encouraged to use computers
actively in their own learning.
Information and communication technology (ICT) has become a basic
requirement for children and adults alike. Our pupils are encouraged to use
computers constructively in their personal learning. Classfronter, a
Virtual Learning Environment, encourages increased contact and co-operation
between pupils, pupils and teachers, and teachers and parents. It is our
belief that our emphasis on ICT cannot fail to benefit our pupils both now
and in their future academic institutions. |

Norwegian is the language used in the classroom and we follow the Norwegian National
Curriculum. Many of the routines and traditions at our school are easily
recognisable from normal practice in Norway. Educational reforms in Norway
are implemented at The Norwegian School and will always influence our
methods. Recent reforms emphasise the importance of skill targets rather
than syllabus. This allows us to tailor teaching to the individual. Small
classes and several year groups in the same room enable pupils to work at
their own level. |
The five basic skills employed in our teaching are:
-
Oral expression
-
Reading
-
Arithmetic
-
Written expression
-
Computer literacy

-
Happy children feel safe and secure.
-
We ease the transition to a new country by enabling the children to access
Norwegian culture, language and games in a natural way. English is
introduced through nursery rhymes and playground games as well as in project
work.
-
In the kindergarten, creativity is emphasised. We utilise the local
environment and nature in teaching as is the norm in kindergartens in
Norway.
-
The kindergarten and main school share the play area. During the course of
the year, we work closely together, resulting in pupils finding the transfer
from kindergarten to the main school relatively easy.
-
The kindergarten is split into two classes.
